4 жыл бұрынTo mark the 50th anniversary of Everton's 1969/70 title win, evertontv set out to tell the story of what remains one of the most revered seasons in the Club's history as recalled by those who played in it and watched it.
Everton, managed by disciplinarian Harry Catterick and inspired on the pitch by the Holy Trinity of Alan Ball, Colin Harvey and Howard Kendall, swaggered their way to the First Division crown, finishing nine points clear of their nearest rivals, Don Revie's vaunted Leeds United.
Learn about the majesty of Catterick's greatest side, why the chemistry of the Holy Trinity was like nothing Goodison had witnessed before and how the team's success was both admired and celebrated from the stands.

As a Greek fan and supporter of Panathinaikos, i still cannot understand how Panathinaikos managed to beat Everton in the Quarterfinals of the 1970/71 European Champions Cup. That win gave us the chance to play against Ajax in the final, after beating Red Star in the semi-finals, an achievment which still remains the biggest of any greek football club. As far as i can tell from this video, Everton had a great side back then. Greetings from Greece!

I remember I got chating to a Panathinaikos fan in the wrong part of Athens ( I was wearing a Panathunaikos shirt to wind up to friends who support Olympiakos ( TO KONINO SKATA as I call them). When this guy started talking to tell me of my mishap and realised I was English, then finding out my team was Everton says ...Ah, Everton , you once had I very very good time, but not now eh , now I like Arsenal more " ...I think that was 2003 maybe !

We Everton fans still cannot understand it either! Possibly the strongest team in Everton's 145-year history, but that Ajax team was something else altogether. I have always had a fondness for PAO ever since. I lived in Ambelokipi for a short time in the mid-90s, used to go past your stadium almost every day--always gave a quiet nod of respect. I remember Jimmy Husband came and lodged at my house for about 6 months when he first moved to Luton in about 1973. I was a small kid, but in awe of Jimmy. A true gentleman, and he had a lot of time for me as a 9 year old getting into football. We played Subbuteo football, and he would always win but I didn't care. He was a hero and that was all that mattered. He scored a hat-trick v Orient (I think?) when he was still living with us, and told the press that his success was due to my mums home cooking! Simple times, and a great bloke.

@@johnhughes8466 yes he was a great player but underrated though, had the opportunity to see him play in Kuala Lumpur in 1982 when Southampton visited, all the attention was on Kevin Keegan and our press didn't realise there was a world champion amongst the Southampton ranks. It was unfortunate that he joined Arsenal when they were in the decline after the 70-71 side was dismantled depriving him of further club honours.

That was the best Everton title winning team. Royle, Kendall, Ball, Hurst etc. The twice titles winning team that Kendall later built were brilliantly too. Long live the Toffees!!

As a Red remember that season very well, Alan Whittle seemed to come from nowhere which wasn't quite true but it was agony going to school each Monday with them being top, great team. Mix of Reds and Blues in our street footy but lots of lads wanted to be Bally. Blue lads.

@@millwallholdings Sadly at Everton's best there was a ban on British clubs though EFC did win the European Cup winners cup before the ban came in. Additionally, Lineker who was sold to Barcelona from Everton said in 1986 there was a collective acknowledgement in Spain that EFC was the best team in Europe at the time.

Wonderful team, the best Everton team in my lifetime & we've had a few. Won the league by playing good football, there were no hatchet men in that team. Superb balance in the side of experienced players & youth. The question of why that team broke up so quickly will never be properly answered. By the early 70's it was all but gone, however nobody nobody can take away those fabulous memories of 1970.

I was at the first game of the season when John Hurst became our top goal scorer. A great team, a privilege to have been there, watching the cream rise to the top.

Can you remember why the Spurs away game was played the same week as the home game. The first time the match was postponed about 3 hours before kickoff cos of heavy snowfall. I feel sure that the floodlights failed the next time they played, but I'm not sure if they came back on and that was the game we won, or if this was a third time the fixture was rearranged and Alan Whittle won it.

@@johnmcgill1025 Yes, it caused assorts of trouble for me, mainly because I was only 15 and had to borrow money and persuade my older brother to give me a lift to the ground! But yes Whittle was on fire and scored virtually every game towards the end of the season! but I cannot actually remember why we played Spurs away and home in the same week?

My favourite/best ever Everton team,I will never forget the roar of the crowd that night,I, like the guy in the programme was minding cars as my dad would not let me go because it was a night game and I was only 10.I like most youngsters was hooked on footie this year with Everton and Brazil really playing great football,I always remember having the Everton kit with the no4 on the back from Barnet shieldhouse on county road,penerol Adidas boots ,mega.I cannot to this day fathom why that side did not go on to win more trophies,fate/the footie gods call it what you will but they certainly were not kind to us,my first goodison match was that stoke game in the programme It is funny that you forget so many things in your life but never something like this 50 years ago.I was also very fortunate to play in the same team as both Gordon west and Gordon banks who shared the goalkeeping on our tour of Malta in78 both really nice guys plus we won the tournament and were presented with the trophy by Stanley Matthews ,I have some great photos of that tour to cherish especially the one at the hotel bar with Gordon west what a character he was.,thank you to that great team of 69/70 you were fantastic.

Marvellous, I remember watching that side although I can't recall who against . Alan whittle's flashing blonde hair and overhead kicks I can still remember. I used to get in the 3/4 gate myself . I lived in Barlow lane which connected to spellow dissected by county rd , minding the cars in delamore st. I turned 7 that title winning year and I was born when we were reigning champions in 63. halcyon days.

A fitting tribute to a fine Everton team with so many great players and led by the last Corinthian Brian Labone; how we miss him. A pity there is little footage, with a dependence on the Charity Shield final 1970 (played at Stamford Bridge against the cup holders) when Bally debuted those white boots. He didn't wear them in Mexico. (Waits to be corrected.) It's a pity not to hear from other players, but at least I finally know what John Hurst sounds like! The race with Leeds was touch and go for a while, but we finally broke clear to finish only one point shy of the points record (67) set by Leeds the previous season. Alan Whittle was so important to the run-in; his goal against West Ham for the two points was stand out. The team was poor against Southampton at the Dell on a bog of a pitch but Catterick managed to sort things out in time to see team home. Worst memory: losing at home to the Reds (albeit with a stand out OG from Sandy B); Best: beating them 2-0 on the way to the title. The atmosphere at Goodison took a boy's breath away. I am forever grateful.

Fate is a fickle thing. As much as one night against Oxford sparked a great team, always feel that two cup ties in '71 seemed to completely knock the stuffing clean out of this one. Even just going to the '71 cup final might have kept the momentum going.

Totally agree mate,we never recovered from those 2 games that week,killed us, plus that last few minutes sitter husband missed in the 68 cup final and the last minute goal by booth for city in the 69 semi final we just were not mentally strong enough and it carried on for many years to come to this day,even the good eighties side should have won more cups,Oxford,manUnited,Liverpool 4 times really crucial games,we did not win one of that lot,could have been another 5 trophies,it's buts and maybe eh!

Yes, nice to hear John Hurst talk too. I'd never heard him speak before. There's another video here where Roger Kenyon is talking about the old days, both Roger and John originating from Blackpool. Johnny Morrissey was such a pivotal member of this team and it's strange that nothing about him has ever surfaced on social media, not even a photo of him as he is today. Both Joe and Alan Ball have always spoken well of him and I met Jimmy Husband twice at EFC functions and he, too, said what a great player Johnny was.

As a kid i sometimes got in at the 3/4 time now & again .Sometimes in the boy' pen, but never really got to watch the genius of the greats. The best was when one of my dad's mates couldn't make it to his season ticket seat in the Goodison rd stand: now and again as they had a block of 4 seats. From up there a kid could actually see what was going on-great old days...oh & i just remembered a time when the boys pen was sold-out, as was the whole ground for the derby-so me & my mate raced down to Anfield & got into the pen there to watch the reserves play -which alright cos there were some great players having a day off from the A side, or up & coming...only time i ever been to Anfield, including when my cousin got married there, i didn't go.....sorry Cuz haha !

This was a good watch. Leeds fan, wasn't around in these days but love all the old stuff from this era. Most years we lost the league by the odd point here and there. But table doesn't lie when you win the league by 9 points, we simply ran out of steam that year.

We just clicked that year mate but in my opinion Leeds were the best team in England from 65 to 75 a truly great team,fuck all this crap about them being dirty most teams in this period dished it out Leeds were just cuter/smarter at it,how the hell they didn't win 6 or7 more trophies I don't know maybe involved in too many games,smaller squads back then and they tended to use the same 12/13 players all season bad luck,shithouse bent ref in the European cup final and against Milan in fairs cup final,the west Brom game,wolves away to win the double after the cup final,losing the league twice on goal difference , a really unlucky side but gave a lot of pleasure to many people as did we in 69/70.

@@tonynesbit9673 Cheers mate, yeah you nailed almost everything there about bad luck and corrupt referees, I think the Milan ref was banned for life after the game? Maybe a slightly bigger squad and little bit of luck we might have won double what we did. And maybe a Gordon Banks in goal would have helped. Some great players in that Everton side aswell. We'd gone 10 months undefeated from October 68 before losing at Goodison. Hopefully be playing you again there soon!

I was at the Panathinaikos game at Goodison and recall the Blues lacked a clinical finisher to get the goals their approach work deserved. As Is always the case the team who sit back and soak up pressure will always get a goal chance, which when it came Panathinaikos took it quite well. When big Joe mentioned the Goodison derby in early December 1969, sadly it was a that game and often looked back on it given the pre- match interview Bill Shankly gave to Bill Elliot in the Daily Express when he described Everton has the finest football team in the Country, which in 1969 they were. I always felt this gamesmanship motivated his team to play well, and lulled Everton into complacency. Standing on the old Goodison Road terracing, I remember Ian Ross who had stuck to Alan Ball like shadow missed an open goal from a few yards out when it was 3-0 to the Reds. Harrry Catterick was no fan of TV Cameras, which was not the case with other top clubs This robbed future fans the chance to see the speed of the football of the 1968-70 side, and both Alex Young and Roy Vernon in their pomp. Always rising to the occasion, as only great players do.

Koppites call it "Woodison" - nobody who remembers the old Park End can argue with that, but it was good enough for a World Cup semi & that was before the new Main stand! Soon we'll have the best ground in the country again, but gonna miss Goodison Those letters on the Enclosure wall - I seem to remember being for showing the scores of other division one HT scores

Leeds beat Everton at Elland road but had to play 5 matches in one week going for the treble at the end and got nothing. Before that they were on course to do it! 65 games ridiculous! Alf Ramsey did us! Everton was a great side, my first game was Leeds vs Everton aged 8 1968.

True, these times will never happen again. There were so many local lads in that squad and, if they weren't locals, most were coming through the youth system, players like Jimmy Husband, John Hurst and Roger Kenyon. In fact, not only were they all all British, but they were all northerners too, if you count Sandy as up north and Tommy Jackson, who played enough matches to get a medal, from Northern Ireland.

I don't know why Keith Newton isn't mentioned once. After the Brown OG, Catterick immediately bought Newton from Blackburn, though his season was cut short by injury after about a dozen appearances.

Jimmy Husband once told me that when they were in the dressing room at Derby County's Baseball Ground, Harry Catterick said that the dump hadn't even been painted since he was there as a player in the 1940s!

The 69/70 team were better than the 80s teams in my opinion, and Hursty was an important piece of the jigsaw. One match that stands out for me was the 5 2 beating of Chelsea, John received a bad head injury but carried on bandaged up. I was stood next to the old "perspex" dug out and I don't think Dave Sexton their manager got out of his seat once during the whole game. The Chelsea keeper (I think Bonetti was injured) made an incredible save , in my memory he was horizontal 6 feet off the ground , the ball seemingly beyond him until he tipped it over the bar.

Great side and a great season. Only disappointment was the surprise 2-1 defeat against Sheffield United in the FA Cup. Following season Everton should have gone all the in the European Cup, Panathanikos were a good side but not as good as Everton,

This was by far the greatest Everton team the season before we actually played better football but did not get the results like we did in 1970 was a season ticket holder from 1967 aged 18 These were halcyon days for myself an all evertonians still sit in the park.end

They came to Sheffield Wednesday as champions, and we needed to get 3 points from 3 games to stay up.(2pts for a win in those days) I always remember them looking lethargic, Joe Royal was sick on the pitch, and went off, other players were just walking around?? Everton won 1-0.I found out later, that the whole Everton Squad had gone to The Grand National on the Thursday prior to the Saturday game to celebrate winning the league, and shall we say, they had a good day out with a few drinks!!!

It was on MotD. The match was billed at the start as Sheffield Wednesday v The League Champions (not, note, Everton). The Wednesday players made a guard of honour to the Toffees, and then went on to utterly dominate the match only to lose to a Johnny Morrissey goal.
